Six or seven seats: two questions to ask

Hyundai IONIQ 9 interior seen from the front: second-row captain’s chairs, a third-row bench and a glass roof.

You cannot decide from a specification sheet. You decide by sitting inside, with the children and the car seat.

  • A car seat in the second row? With two captain’s chairs, the centre aisle stays clear so a child can climb into the back independently. With a bench, you need to tilt it each time.
  • Seven people every week, or three times a year? For a few outings a year, a seven-seat layout with a second-row bench is enough. For teenagers every week, captain’s chairs are worth the seat they replace.
  • What about cargo space? With the third row up, there is less than you might think: 573 litres in the Kia EV9, compared with 1,233 litres with the row folded.

The difference that changes your fuel bill

A hybrid does not plug in: it saves fuel without changing your habits. A plug-in hybrid drives on electricity first, for 43 to 72 km depending on the model, then becomes a gas vehicle again. Plugged in every night, it is hard to beat. Never plugged in, it uses more fuel than a regular hybrid.

  • An outlet at home and less than 50 km a day. A plug-in hybrid.
  • No outlet, lots of driving. A hybrid, or electric if charging is simple for you.

A test drive with the passengers who will sit in the back

It is the only honest way to judge a third row. Tell us the model: the dealership will call you about a test drive.

Frequently asked questions about 7-passenger SUVs

How many seven-seat electric SUVs are in the network?

Three: the 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9, the 2026 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and the 2026 Kia EV9. The network’s other fully electric SUVs have only two rows.

Does the Kia Sorento hybrid have seven seats?

No. Kia Canada lists six seats, with captain’s chairs, for the 2026 Sorento hybrid and plug-in hybrid. Seating must be checked by trim.

Do seven seats mean room for seven adults?

Not always. In the Outlander PHEV, the third row is for occasional use (5+2); in the Carnival and Palisade, it is considerably roomier. A test drive with your actual passengers is the only way to decide.

Do I need a charging station for a plug-in hybrid?

No: a regular 120-volt outlet charges overnight, but slowly. A 240-volt charging station makes a real difference if your daily trip approaches the vehicle’s electric range.
