An entirely new generation
On October 1, 2026, in New York, Hyundai Motor Company unveiled the new generation of the Tucson, its compact SUV sold in more than 11.1 million units since 2004, according to the manufacturer. The styling, which Hyundai calls “Art of Steel,” turns its back on the flowing lines of the current generation: muscular fenders, flat sides, a horizontal light signature at the front and light bar taillights.
The new Tucson grows in every direction: 4,700 mm long (+60 mm), 1,905 mm wide (+40 mm), 1,685 mm tall (+20 mm) and a 2,785 mm wheelbase (+30 mm), according to the manufacturer’s spec sheet for the long-wheelbase version, the North American one. The doors also open wider, to 83 degrees.
When does it arrive in Canada?
According to Hyundai Canada’s “Coming soon” pageFR, the new Tucson will arrive in Canada in early 2027, in a gas version and a new-generation hybrid version. Hyundai Canada has not yet published the trims, the equipment by trim, the fuel consumption in L/100 km or the price. Hyundai Motor Company, for its part, confirms a launch in Korea first, then in North America and Europe in 2027.
Hyundai simply speaks of the “new Tucson”: the exact model year under which it will be sold in Canada is not yet confirmed. We will update this article as soon as Hyundai Canada publishes its prices and trims.
Gas or hybrid: what we know about the powertrains
- Gas: a 1.6 L turbo with 184 horsepower, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
- New-generation hybrid: 233 horsepower, 6-speed automatic transmission. Hyundai announces a towing capacity of 1,361 kg (3,000 lb) in North America, which is 1,000 lb more than before.
These power figures are U.S. data published by Hyundai; the Canadian figures will come with the official spec sheet. The hybrid adds a mode that keeps the air conditioning, heating and radio running with the engine off, handy while waiting in a parking lot. A plug-in hybrid version exists in some markets, but Hyundai Canada does not announce it for Canada.
The current Tucson, for its part, remains available in gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid: our article on its three powertrains compares them.
A cabin rethought around the Pleos Connect screen
On board, Hyundai introduces its new Pleos Connect system, based on Android Automotive: a 17-inch central screen, which Hyundai Canada presents as the largest infotainment screen in compact SUVs, with an app store, remote updates and the Gleo artificial intelligence assistant. In front of the driver, a slim 9.9-inch screen. Hyundai keeps physical buttons for the climate control and audio, and moves the gear selector to the steering column to free up the console.
Hyundai Canada also announces ventilated front seats and a head-up display as available options. The manufacturer adds two wireless phone chargers and 100 W USB-C ports on the back of the front seats. Some equipment shown at the unveiling, such as the massaging seats, is reserved for other markets.
A bigger cargo area
Hyundai Canada announces a cargo area of 41.7 cubic feet, or about 1,067 litres, which it presents as the best in its class. The legal notice specifies that this measurement is based on Hyundai’s development targets: the final figure will be confirmed when the vehicle goes on sale. The rear seat folds 60/40.
And the XRT PRO trim?
Hyundai also showed an XRT PRO trim, designed for off-roading: all-wheel drive, all-terrain tires, front tow hooks, ground clearance raised to 210 mm and a new assistance, Smart Terrain Assist, which assesses how difficult the terrain is and manages speed between 2 and 25 km/h. Hyundai intends it for North America, but Hyundai Canada has not yet confirmed it for Canada.
Safety
Hyundai announces a reinforced body of hot-stamped steel, driver attention monitoring, rear-seat child presence detection, advanced highway driving assistance and a “transparent” ground view for maneuvering. The manufacturer is aiming for the best ratings from the testing organizations, but no results have been published yet.
